TVDE training and CMTVDE certificate: what to check

A training course, an exam and a study app serve different purposes. Keep the official certification process separate from the tools you use to learn.

Check that training is recognised

The IMT states that initial and continuing TVDE training may only be provided by legally qualified entities recognised by the IMT. Check its current provider list before enrolling. An online advertisement or a claim about fast approval is not a substitute for that check.

Ask the provider about course dates, the location of practical work, the language used, included assessment arrangements and the total price. Obtain clear answers before choosing a course.

Initial training and renewal are different

The IMT describes initial training as at least 50 hours, including theoretical and practical components. Continuing training for renewal is described as 8 hours. These are course requirements, not a target number of hours to spend in an app.

The IMT also publishes the conditions for the final assessment and explains when it is required for renewal. Your previous certification and assessment history matter, so confirm the route that applies to you.

Organise the certification checklist

The CMTVDE is issued by the IMT after the required checks and payment. Its guidance covers licence conditions, successful training and suitability requirements. Use the current official instructions for your documents and submission rather than treating this guide as a complete personal eligibility assessment.

  • Confirm the route applicable to your licence and existing certificates.
  • Verify the training entity’s recognition.
  • Ask who organises the final assessment.
  • Use current IMT instructions for documents and the certificate request.
  • Keep a record of dates, confirmations and the next action.

Use an app as a complement

TVDE Ready supports European Portuguese, quizzes and exam practice. It does not deliver recognised training or issue certificates. Work through your course materials, then use short app sessions to practise comprehension and review weak topics. Course fees, exam arrangements and app prices should be checked separately.

What to study in the course programme

Portaria 293/2018 covers communication, legal rules, driving techniques, activity regulation, emergencies and practical driving. Organise your materials by area and ask the provider where a skill is taught if you cannot identify it.

Training hours and successful completion belong to recognised training. App practice can support vocabulary and review; a phone score cannot demonstrate attendance or completion of the practical component.

  • Communicate with passengers and clarify misunderstandings.
  • Understand legal rules and driving techniques.
  • Separate professional roles and activity rules.
  • Learn emergencies and first aid through training.
  • Complete practical work as organised by the provider.

Compare the course and certificate application

Before enrolling, ask what the price includes and how theory, practice and assessment work. If advertised as online, confirm physical attendance and recognition. A word in an advert is not enough to establish eligibility.

After training, check the CMTVDE issuance service at IMT. Keep receipts and confirmations separate from study notes. The price guide helps compare offers; the requirements guide helps organise the documents and application.

To compare two TVDE training offers, ask for written answers to the same questions. A low first instalment is not enough to compare total costs. Note what is included and what must be paid separately.

  • What is the total price and payment schedule?
  • Where and when do theory, practical training and assessment take place?
  • Are any assessment or IMT application charges included, and which ones?
