Portuguese for TVDE drivers: useful passenger phrases
Start with short sentences you can recognise, say and understand in a real conversation. The Portuguese examples below are language practice, not instructions to stop or drive somewhere unsafe.
At passenger pickup
Use a polite greeting and confirm the journey without assuming you have understood. Adapt names and details to the real situation, and learn how a passenger might answer.
- Bom dia. É a viagem para a Ana? — Good morning. Is this Ana’s trip?
- Pode confirmar o destino, por favor? — Could you confirm the destination, please?
- Precisa de ajuda com a bagagem? — Do you need help with your luggage?
During the journey
Listen to the whole reply, not just the word you expected. Practise the question and two possible answers while parked, so the exercise develops comprehension as well as speaking.
- A temperatura está confortável? — Is the temperature comfortable?
- Prefere que baixe o volume da música? — Would you prefer me to turn the music down?
- Há algum ponto de referência perto do destino? — Is there a landmark near the destination?
When you do not understand
Asking for repetition is clearer than pretending you understood. Practise one simple request until you can use it naturally, then add a confirmation question.
- Desculpe, pode repetir, por favor? — Sorry, could you repeat that, please?
- Pode falar um pouco mais devagar? — Could you speak a little more slowly?
- Só para confirmar: é nesta entrada? — Just to confirm: is it this entrance?
Arrival and a short daily routine
Confirm the destination and choose a place where stopping is permitted and safe. Practise “Não se esqueça dos seus pertences” to remind passengers about their belongings, and “Obrigado. Tenha um bom dia” for a polite farewell.
Choose three phrases, listen, repeat and answer a variation. In the next session, recall them before adding more. TVDE Ready’s European Portuguese lessons and listening exercises can support this routine; compare progress over several sessions rather than expecting fluency in a few days.
Practise the passenger response too
A memorised question does not complete a conversation if you cannot recognise the answer. Practise two possible replies for each phrase. Read the Portuguese, identify its meaning and repeat with suitable names or places.
These short dialogues are study examples. They are not instructions about driving, stopping locations or handling an incident.
If you hear “Pode baixar um pouco?” (Could you lower it a little?), use the context. Are you discussing music or temperature? If the reference is unclear, confirm: “Refere-se ao volume da música?” Practise “Sim, ao volume” and “Não, à temperatura”. Learn to clarify the request before guessing its meaning.
- «Pode confirmar o destino?» — «É a estação.» / «É o hotel.»: the station / the hotel.
- «Precisa de ajuda com a bagagem?» — «Sim, obrigado.» / «Não, obrigado.»: yes / no, thank you.
- «É nesta entrada?» — «Sim, é aqui.» / «É na próxima entrada.»: here / the next entrance.
- «A temperatura está confortável?» — «Está bem.» / «Pode baixar um pouco?»: fine / lower it a little.
Build listening comprehension before increasing speed
Listen to a short sentence, repeat it and explain the meaning without looking at the translation. Then listen to a variation. Use slower speed as support when needed, gradually returning to normal speech.
Keep a short list of expressions you confused. Practise requesting repetition and checking what you understood. Study outside driving or safely parked. Understanding well matters more than quickly completing many recordings.
